WRITTEN IN FIRE (Brilliance Trilogy #3) Review

WRITTEN IN FIRE (Brilliance Trilogy #3)

Written In Fire (Brilliance Trilogy, Book 3)Publisher Synopsis:

For thirty years humanity struggled to cope with the brilliants, the one percent of people born with remarkable gifts. For thirty years we tried to avoid a devastating civil war. We failed.

The White House is a smoking ruin. Madison Square Garden is an internment camp. In Wyoming, an armed militia of thousands marches toward a final, apocalyptic battle.

Nick Cooper has spent his life fighting for his children and his country. Now, as the world staggers on the edge of ruin, he must risk everything he loves to face his oldest enemy—a brilliant terrorist so driven by his ideals that he will sacrifice humanity’s future to achieve them.

Review:

I read A BETTER WORLD (Brilliance Trilogy #2) and WRITTEN IN FIRE (#3) back to back and mentioned previously that I enjoyed the hell out of A BETTER WORLD. For the middle book in a trilogy, WRITTEN IN FIRE was seriously impressive. No sag, no holding pattern. Full-throttle enjoyment.

WRITTEN IN FIRE, again, does not disappoint. Sakey increases the jeopardy for his characters and raises the stakes for his imagined alternate world. I haven’t enjoyed a story this much in a long time. Marcus Sakey is a consummate storyteller with an intriguing premise bristling with suspense and executed with panache. Highly recommended.

Though Sakey says he’s done with his Brilliance saga, I hope some time in the not too distant future he stumbles upon some fresh inspiration to take us back again for another fix. Good stuff!

Recently Received Galley: Written in Fire (Brilliance Trilogy, # 3)

Just received an eGalley of Marcus Sakey’s third and final volume in the Brilliance Trilogy, Written in Fire which follows Brilliance & A Better World. I really enjoyed Brilliance and need to catch up fast and read A Better World so I can check out the finale!

From “one of our best storytellers” (Michael Connelly) comes the blistering conclusion to the acclaimed series that is a “forget-to-pick-up-milk, forget-to-water-the-plants, forget-to-eat total immersion experience” (Gillian Flynn).

ALIVE (Scott Sigler)

Alive by Scott Sigler

Alive by Scott Sigler

SYNOPSIS: For fans of The Hunger Games, Divergent, and Red Rising comes a gripping sci-fi adventure in which a group of teenagers wake up in a mysterious corridor with no knowledge of who they are or how they got trapped. Their only hope lies with an indomitable young woman who must lead them not only to answers but to survival.

REVIEW: YA science fiction Adventure is a good description for ALIVE by Scott Sigler. This novel comes close to thriller territory without crossing that border. Alive proceeds from the waking of heroine M. Savage and continues in a claustrophobic first person POV — appropriate since she awakens in what she believes is a coffin! — with a series of reveals that gradually raise the stakes for survival. Savage becomes the leader of a group of young people who are mentally younger than their physical age. Though they believe it is their twelfth birthday, they have the bodies of young adults. In addition, they have all awakened with no memory of who they are (their first initial and surnames are printed on their “coffins”) or their situation. They proceed down seemingly endless corridors and, early on, their only discoveries are of other chambers filled with violently murdered remains of humans who died at various ages, some very young. Other bodies seem to be the result of malfunctioning “coffins.” Whatever was supposed to have happened appears to have gone seriously awry.

Most of the novel takes place while Savage, who becomes the leader of two groups who team up, discovers the true nature of their environment, followed by the discovery of their intended fate and their struggle to take back control of their lives and destinies.

Alive rarely pulls any punches and keeps you guessing until the tense ending. And while the novel tells a complete story, Sigler clearly leaves the door open for future volumes in the tale of Savage’s group and those who placed them in their coffins long before the novel’s opening scene of awakening.

Recommended for YA readers who enjoy a (somewhat) dystopian tale with a science fiction twist.

Note: my review is based on a e-galley, i.e., an advanced reader copy (ARC) of Alive.

ALIVE

Scott Sigler

Synopsis: For fans of The Hunger Games, Divergent, and Red Rising comes a gripping sci-fi adventure in which a group of teenagers wake up in a mysterious corridor with no knowledge of who they are or how they got trapped. Their only hope lies with an indomitable young woman who must lead them not only to answers but to survival.

“I open my eyes to darkness. Total darkness. I hear my own breathing, but nothing else. I lift my head . . . it thumps against something solid and unmoving. There is a board right in front of my face. No, not a board . . . a lid.”

A teenage girl awakens to find herself trapped in a coffin. She has no idea who she is, where she is, or how she got there. Fighting her way free brings little relief—she discovers only a room lined with caskets and a handful of equally mystified survivors. Beyond their room lies a corridor filled with bones and dust, but no people . . . and no answers.

She knows only one thing about herself—her name, M. Savage, which was engraved on the foot of her coffin—yet she finds herself in charge. She is not the biggest among them, or the boldest, but for some reason the others trust her. Now, if they’re to have any chance, she must get them to trust each other.

Whatever the truth is, she is determined to find it and confront it. If she has to lead, she will make sure they survive. Maybe there’s a way out, a rational explanation, and a fighting chance against the dangers to come. Or maybe a reality they cannot comprehend lies just beyond the next turn.

Advance praise for ALIVE

“A ripping, claustrophobic thunderbolt of a novel, Scott Sigler’s Alive gives us an unforgettable young hero who must find the inner strength to lead without knowing where she is, who she is, and how bitterly the odds are stacked against her.”
—Pierce Brown, New York Times bestselling author of Red Rising

“Sigler has created a wonderful and engrossing character in M. Savage. Strong and smart, but with the naïveté and misgivings of any teenage girl, she’s someone you’ll definitely want on your side when s*** hits the fan, which it most certainly does.”
—Veronica Belmont, host of Sword & Laser

“A tense, unsettling page-turner of a story—both deeply strange and wildly compelling.”
—Cherie Priest, author of Boneshaker and Maplecroft

“From the first page I was hooked. The puzzle unfolds masterfully, right down to the last page.”
—Dr. Phil Plait, author of Bad Astronomy

Recently Received Galleys (ARCs)

I received some eBook galleys/ARCs (Advance Reader Copy) of some upcoming (or recently released) books that I’m hoping to get to in the near future. Here’s a sneak peek:

Within These Walls, Ania Ahlborn

Within These Walls, Ania Ahlborn

WITHIN THESE WALLS: From indie horror author and bestselling sensation Ania Ahlborn, this brand-new supernatural thriller questions: how far would you go for success, and what would you be capable of if the promise of forever was real?

With his marriage on the rocks and his life in shambles, washed up crime writer Lucas Graham is desperate for a comeback. So when he’s promised exclusive access to notorious cult leader and death row inmate Jeffrey Halcomb, the opportunity is too good to pass up. Lucas leaves New York for the scene of the crime—a split-level farmhouse on the gray-sanded beach of Washington State—a house whose foundation is steeped in the blood of Halcomb’s diviners; runaways who, thirty years prior, were drawn to his message of family, unity, and unconditional love. Lucas wants to tell the real story of Halcomb’s faithful departed, but when Halcomb goes back on his promise of granting Lucas exclusive information on the case, he’s left to put the story together on his own. Except he is not alone. For Jeffrey Halcomb promised his devout eternal life…and within these walls, they’re far from dead.

The Glittering World by Robert Levy

The Glittering World by Robert Levy

THE GLITTERING WORLD: In the tradition of Neil Gaiman (The Ocean at the End of the Lane), Scott Smith (The Ruins), and Jason Mott (The Returned), award-winning playwright Robert Levy spins a dark tale of alienation and belonging, the familiar and the surreal, family secrets and the search for truth in his debut supernatural thriller.

When up-and-coming chef Michael “Blue” Whitley returns with three friends to the remote Canadian community of his birth, it appears to be the perfect getaway from New York. He soon discovers, however, that everything he thought he knew about himself is a carefully orchestrated lie. Though he had no recollection of the event, as a young boy Blue and another child went missing for weeks in the idyllic, mysterious woods of Starling Cove. Soon thereafter, his mother suddenly fled with him to America, their homeland left behind.

But then Blue begins to remember. And once the shocking truth starts bleeding back into his life, his closest friends—Elisa, his former partner in crime; her stalwart husband, Jeremy; and Gabe, Blue’s young and admiring co-worker—must unravel the secrets of Starling Cove and the artists’ colony it once harbored. All four will face their troubled pasts, their most private demons, and a mysterious race of beings that inhabits the land, spoken of by the locals only as the Other Kind…

Monday's Lie, Jamie Mason

Monday’s Lie, Jamie Mason

MONDAY’S LIE: From the acclaimed author of the “ripping good” (The New York Times) debut novel Three Graves Full comes a new thriller about a woman who digs into her unconventional past to confirm what she suspects: her husband wants her dead.

Dee Aldrich rebelled against her off-center upbringing when she married the most conventional man she could imagine: Patrick, her college sweetheart. But now, years later, her marriage is falling apart and she’s starting to believe that her husband wants her gone…for good.

Haunted by memories of her late mother Annette, a former covert operations asset, Dee reaches back into her childhood to resurrect the lessons and “spy games” in which she learned memory tricks and, most importantly, how and when to lie. But just as she begins delving into her past to determine the course of the future, she makes a discovery that will change her life: the money that her mother left behind. Now, Dee must investigate her suspicions before it’s too late and untangle conspiracy from coincidence, using her mother’s advice to steer her through the blind spots. The trick, in the end, will be in discovering if a “normal life” is really what she wanted at all.

With pulse-pounding prose and atmospheric settings, Monday’s Lie is a thriller that delivers more of the “Hitchcockian menace” (Peter Straub) that made Three Graves Full a critical hit. For fans of the Coen brothers or Alexander McCall Smith, this is a book you won’t want to miss.

Hades, Candice Fox

Hades by Candice Fox

HADES: Twenty years ago, two children were kidnapped and left for dead.
Raised by a master criminal, they grew up to become cops. Very unusual cops . . .

Homicide detective Frank Bennett has an intriguing new partner. Dark, beautiful, coldly efficient, Eden Archer is one of the most enigmatic colleagues Frank has ever worked with—that includes her brother Eric, who’s also on the Sydney Metro police force. All of them are tested to the core when a local man discovers a graveyard of large steel toolboxes lying at the bottom of the harbor. Each box contains a grisly trove of human body parts.

For Frank, the madman’s clues are a tantalizing puzzle. For Eden and Eric, the case holds chilling links to a scarred childhood—and a murderous mentor named Hades. But the true evil goes beyond the bloody handiwork of a serial killer…

Praise for Hades, winner of the Ned Kelly Award

“Compelling . . . A chilling read.” —Sydney Morning Herald

“A frighteningly self-assured debut with strong characters and feisty, no-nonsense writing.”—Qantas magazine

“Powerful, twisted, dark, original—an incredible read.”—The Reading Room

“Hades combines a number of current genre tropes into something new and exciting. A little bit Dexter, a little bit procedural, overall a great first novel.”—Australian Crime Writers Association

(Additional Info About my Fundraising Effort)

Dear Family and Friends,

In 2001, Matthew, my then-7-year-old son was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and given six months to live. Today Matthew is a 13-year brain tumor survivor.

For seven years, my family ran the Matthew’s Miles walkathon to raise funds for pediatric brain tumor research. This year, on September 6, we’ll be running — with some of us walking — as TEAM MATTHEW’S MILERS to raise money for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation as part of the 8.5K Starry Night Run/Walk.

Every day 13 more children in the United States are diagnosed with a brain tumor.

More than 28,000 children in the United States are living with a brain tumor. And each of the 28,000 steps in Starry Night’s 8.5K raises much-needed funds for lifesaving medical research and life-changing family support programs.

My sneakers are tied and I’m ready to hit the pavement! I have committed to help cure the kids!

I’ve registered to participate in Starry Night Philadelphia to support the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation,  shining a light on pediatric brain tumors and taking a stand against one of the deadliest forms of childhood cancer.

Please help me reach my fund-raising goal and support me as I join hundreds of other runners and walkers to cure the kids.

You can donate online. Your support will also give children with brain tumors—our Shining Stars—a brighter future. The kids can’t do it without you!

Please email me if you have questions about Starry Night or the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. I hope you’re able to support my participation. I’ll keep you updated on my progress.

Use My Name for a Character in Your ‘Grimm’ Novel (Contest!)

GRIMM #2 by John Passarella

GRIMM #2 by John Passarella

It’s official. I’m having a “Use My Name for a Character in Your Grimm novel” contest. If I didn’t use your name in Supernatural: Rite of Passage (or any of my other novels), you are eligible.

To summarize: if chosen, I will use your name for a character who will most likely be nothing like you in appearance, demeanor, family makeup, career, etc. It’s just a “shout out” for you from the world of Grimm. Any resemblance is, as they say, purely coincidental. Most likely, your character will be killed in a gruesome fashion or possibly be a witness to a gruesome event. I usually don’t use the “shout out” characters as bad guys, evildoers, miscreants, etc. Generally, victim or neutral observer or a name mentioned in passing. But no guarantees!

If your name is chosen for a character, I will email you a release/disclaimer letter that you need to sign, have witnessed and return to me promptly. Because of tight deadlines, if I don’t get the letter back in time, I will have to swap out names. Even if I send the letter and you sign it, have it witnessed and return it on time, there is no guarantee your character will appear in the final book. All scenes are subject to editorial review and potential deletion. You might be in an early draft, but have your scene cut before publication. (This happens to actors in movies and TV shows all the time.) So, no guarantees or promises. This is done for the fun of it, enjoyment by fans, etc. No purchase is necessary but, obviously, your support of the books helps ensure the original Grimm tie-in novels will continue.

If you want to enter the contest, send me an email at author@passarella.com with your first and last name and tell me what you love about Grimm. Put GRIMM Name Contest in the subject line!

Grimm: Book #2 (title not set yet) is due out FEBRUARY 18, 2014 but you can pre-order now!

OTHER NOTES:

Gender-neutral names: If you have a gender-neutral name and I guess wrong (M? F?), please don’t be offended. If you want to remove any chance for fictional gender reassignment, specify your gender in your entry!

Same First or Last Names Ineligible: If your first name is the same as that of a prominent or recently featured character, I probably will not choose your name to avoid fan confusion. (e.g., Nick, Hank, Juliette, Sean, Rosalee, etc.) This applies to last names as well. (e.g., If your name is Sally Burkhardt or Paul Renard, I won’t be able to use it.)

AGE RESTRICTION: Per the letter of agreement I need to send you in order to have your name used in the book, you must be 18 years old at the time you sign the document.

DEADLINE: August 1, 2013!

Please spread the word! Thanks for your interest!
