Supernatural: Rite of Passage

It’s official. I’m having another “Use My Name for a Character in Your Supernatural” novel contest again. If I didn’t use your name in Supernatural: Night Terror (or any of my other novels), you are eligible.

To summarize: if chosen, I will use your name for a character who will most likely be nothing like you in appearance, demeanor, family makeup, career, etc. It’s just a “shout out” for you from the land of Supernatural. Any resemblance is, as they say, purely coincidental. Most likely, your character will be killed in a gruesome fashion or possibly be a witness to a gruesome event. I usually don’t use the “shout out” characters as bad guys, evildoers, miscreants, etc. Generally, victim or neutral observer. But no guarantees!

If your name is chosen for a character, I will email you a release/disclaimer letter that you need to sign, have witnessed and return to me promptly. Because of tight deadlines, if I don’t get the letter back in time, I might have to swap out names. (I will keep a list of alternate names for a global search & replace operation.) Even if I send the letter and you sign it, have it witnessed and return it on time, there is no guarantee your character will appear in the final book. All scenes are subjected to editorial review and potential deletion. You might be in an early draft, but have your scene cut before publication. (This happens to actors in movies and TV shows all the time.) So, no guarantees or promises. This is done for the fun of it, enjoyment by fans, etc. No purchase is necessary but, obviously, your support of the books helps ensure the original Supernatural tie-in novels will continue.

Supernatural: Rite of Passage is due out AUGUST 14, 2012 but you can pre-order now!

UPDATE #1 (Monday, JAN 16, 2012): Regarding gender-neutral names: If you have a gender-neutral name and I guess wrong (M? F?), please don’t be offended. If you want to remove any chance for fictional gender reassignment, specify your gender in your entry!

UPDATE #2 (Monday, JAN 16, 2012): Forgot to mention that if your first name is the same as that of a prominent or recently featured character, I probably will not choose your name to avoid fan confusion. (e.g., Bobby, Frank, Ellen, Jody, Amy) This applies to last names as well. (e.g., If your name is Sally Winchester or Paul Singer, I won’t be able to use it.)

UPDATE #3: Due to the overwhelming response — well over 100 names received just in the last 24 hours — I’m ending the contest today. Last call is 11:59PM ET on JAN 17, 2012.

UPDATE #4: Per the letter of agreement I need to send you in order to have your name used in the book, you must be 18 years old at the time you sign the document.

@agtspooky I thought reading the scripts ahead of time would ruin the eps for me. But it's the opposite. I get more out of them. #
@agtspooky Plus, helps me know where the writers are going w/ some tidbit info seen earlier, so I can foreshadow rather than contradict it. #
@trackerem It helps to know where they are going, so my stuff won't contradict it. Helps me stay closer to canon. #
@trackerem This book will be out after we've seen all these eps plus MORE. So it helps me keep consistent w/ the arcs/mythos. #
@JuliaGypsy The show wants the books as close to canon as possible. This helps. I wrote "blind" for Buffy/Angel books. #
@agtspooky They're final shooting scripts so very close. Noticed a scene was moved from one ep to another. #
@JuliaGypsy I was given time frame. 3rd season Buffy. Then 1st and 4th season Angel. Certain rules. Go from there. Not as immediate as SPN. #
@JuliaGypsy Dean is probably the most fun to write. #
