Special Day for an Author

Today was the day that I received my author copies of Kindred Spirit. The final book. The version that will be on book shelves in a few weeks. (May 23, 2006 to be precise.)

KINDRED SPIRIT It took me twenty-five years of writing to have my first novel published and maybe that’s what always makes it so special for me to hold the finished book in my hands. It’s always a long process, from initial idea to published book. I turned in the draft of KINDRED SPIRIT back in November 2002. Since that time, the manuscript has not changed much. Most of the revisions were done prior to that point. Now, four years later, I get to hold the “real” book in my hands. To feel the weight of it. To ruffle the pages and catch that new book smell I’ve loved since I was a young boy with dreams of someday being a published author. It’s the reward at the end of a long journey, and every book has a unique journey to publication. I take some time to appreciate that when I hold the final book in my hands.

In a way, it’s also a glimpse back to days long ago, to the early idea, to the development of the plot and the realization of the characters… to a different time in my life. I did much of the research for KINDRED SPIRIT in June and July of 2000. I was six years younger. I had two children then. I have three now, and the third is in pre-K.

I’ve finished the next book after KINDRED SPIRIT and that book will now begin its own unique journey to publication…or not. Publication is never guaranteed. But my attention is split yet again. The book just completed in manuscript form takes up part of my time as I try to find it a home, but I’m also getting ready to do a book tour for the finished book I now hold in my hands… and I’m also preparing myself to start serious work on the NEXT book. Sometimes, life as an author feels like being a time traveler.

Holding that finished book reminds me what all the writing, and revising, and promoting, and seeking publication is all about. It’s about the book. The book on the shelf at the local bookstore, for sale online, on a shelf in a library… waiting to be read and, I hope, enjoyed. For an author, seeing the finished book is a special moment of celebration. But it’s also a reminder that there are other books that need to be written, that you can’t sit on your laurels and be satisfied with what you wrote six years ago, sold four years ago, and will autograph a month from now. You hope to become a better writer next time, to tell a better story, to get it more right the next time out. If you don’t hope to improve, if you stop setting new goals, then what’s the point? Life and the passing years represent a new well of ideas and experiences to draw from. I’m proud of the books I’ve written, but I always hope my next one will be my best.

I’m a different writer now than I was six years ago. I have new stories to tell. I am an author. It’s what I do. And I appreciate all the readers out there who let me do this thing that I love.

Thank you,
John Passarella

On the Air for “Undead Air” with Preston & Steve

Hi, Everyone –

MODERN MAGIC - Fantasist Enterprises - Features my story I wrote a short story called “Undead Air” based upon a painting called “Zombie Riot” by David Seidman. The interesting thing about the painting was that it featured real life Philadelphia morning show DJs Preston & Steve (WMMR, 93.3FM) battling a horde of ravenous zombies. (Are there any other kind?) My challenge was to place two real people in a fictional situation. The painting had a gonzo attitude, with Preston firing a pump action shotgun into a charging mass of undead and Steve wielding a baseball bat with equal effectiveness. In writing the story, I took my cue from that gonzo portrayal, hoping to deliver an appropriate companion prose piece for the artwork.

To help with my research, Preston and Steve graciously allowed me to come into the studio to observe one of their shows from start to finish. While songs played and during commercial breaks, they answered my questions about the studio equipment and the inner workings of a metropolitan morning radio show and allowed me to take pictures of the studio layout. (These would help me choreograph the fight scenes and remember where the various pieces of equipment were located and provide visual details I could call upon later during the writing process.) The rest of the time, I sat nearby, quietly taking notes as they welcomed studio guests and conducted humorous phone interviews. After the show, they took me back to their office and this really made my job as a writer much easier. Why? Well, because they had a baseball bat and replica swords in their inner sanctum, just the kind of weapons they would need in the story to battle an invading army of zombies. I would think of a way for Preston to lose his sword and get his hands on the aforementioned shotgun. And Steve would be sure to hang onto that bat for the final confrontation scene! Before I left the station, I even scored some promotional radio show swag. Overall, a productive, informative, and entertaining day.

And now it all comes full circle. Modern Magic, featuring “Undead Air” is now available at Amazon.com — and I will be appearing as a guest on WMMR 93.3 FM on the Preston & Steve show (along with the anthology’s editor (W.H. Horner) and David Seidman, the illustrator) on Tuesday morning, May 16 to discuss the final product. This time I get to talk when the mikes are live! If you’re in the Philadelphia, PA metropolitan area, tune in and give a listen. If you’re not in the area, it’s possible the bit will be available later as one of the Preston and Steve podcasts. And, of course, the book is available everywhere.

In Modern Magic “Undead Air” is accompanied by two new Seidman illustrations of Preston and Steve in zombie-laden jeopardy, but you can see a poster of “Zombie Riot“, the painting that inspired my story by visiting David’s CafePress store.

I had a lot of fun visiting the studio and observing the Preston & Steve show live. I had a blast writing “Undead Air.” And now I’m really looking forward to talking about the story with the two main characters. Many authors say their characters talk to them. In this case, for me, that’s absolutely literal. I hope you enjoy my first zombie story!

Publishers Weekly on KINDRED SPIRIT

Publishers Weekly is the leading trade magazine for the publishing industry. Here’s what they say about KINDRED SPIRIT in the May 1, 2006 issue:
“Stoker Award–winning horror novelist Passarella (Wither) brings a paranormal twist to this thriller about a television reporter probing the murder of her twin. A meticulous researcher, Passarella deftly interweaves Hallie’s crisis of identity with her investigation… Passarella offers enough tension and fresh twists to make this a strong entry in the evolving field of cross-genre suspense.”

Author Nancy Holder on KINDRED SPIRIT

Nancy Holder, award-winning author of approximately 80 books and over 200 short stories read the Kindred Spirit ARC and had this to say:

“Not since Thomas Tryon’s THE OTHER has a story of twins so riveted and intrigued me.  John Passarella has definitely got the mojo.  This is an author who never disappoints–he terrifies!   I’d ask for more but I really need to get some sleep now!”
–Nancy Holder

My heartfelt thanks go out to Nancy for taking time to read and speaking so highly of my forthcoming novel.

Until next time,
Jack

Kindred Spirit PODCAST for Chapter One

Hi, Everyone –

Hot on the heels of the PODCAST of the Prologue of KINDRED SPIRIT, I’ve now completed the podcast for Chapter One.

The Passarella Author Podcast page is here:

http://www.passarella.com/passpodcast.htm

Or you can access the MP3 directly at:

http://www.passarella.com/podcast/ks_chap1.mp3 (9.6 MB)

And, again, the PODCAST XML feed URL is:

http://www.passarella.com/podcast/passpodcast.xml

So now it’s reader’s/listener’s choice: The complete KINDRED SPIRIT excerpt is now available in written and audio formats. (Same copyrights apply: Copyright 2006 by John Passarella. All rights reserved.)

[Technical Note: I noticed a tendency in my reading voice to start a sentence louder than I finish. To counter this, I applied an “amplify” effect to almost all the sections to try to level it out, which created a few odd spikes here and there. The reading of this chapter is about 20 minutes long.]

Thanks for reading — or listening!
Until next time,
-Jack

Kindred Spirit Excerpt via PODCAST

Hi, Everyone –

A week or so ago, I posted an excerpt from KINDRED SPIRIT, consisting of the Prologue and Chapter One. Meanwhile, my publisher, Pocket Books (Simon & Schuster), has posted Chapter One as an excerpt on their KS page.

Now, I’ve taken the excerpt concept to the next logical step: podcasting.

Passarella Author Podcast Graphic I’ve been creating RSS feeds for a while now, but I’m new to the world of podcasting (i.e., audio broadcasting via the Web; in my case, this amounts to a remote and portable author reading!), so please excuse any beginner mistakes.

I realize many of my fans are probably unfamiliar with podcasting, so I’ve tried to make this easy and accessible for everyone. You may not know how to (or care to) download podcasts or subscribe to podcast feeds/shows. That’s fine. What I’ve done is create a podcast Web page where you can simply listen to or download the MP3, which is the heart of the podcast concept.

You’ll find my podcast page with instructions here:

http://www.passarella.com/passpodcast.htm

On the other hand, if you would like to subscribe to the Passarella Author Podcast in iTunes or some other podcasting software, I’ve also created a true podcast XML file. This is the one you need to subscribe to the podcast. I hope to do a podcast for Chapter One of KINDRED SPIRIT as well. Beyond that, I don’t know if I’ll be doing regular podcasts on the order of audio newsletters — but I might! My short-term goal is to podcast the Prologue & Chapter One, and to do something similar for future books.

Here’s the URL for the podcast XML file:

http://www.passarella.com/podcast/passpodcast.xml

That won’t make much sense in your browser window, but it’s the format you need to subscribe to RSS feeds and, in this case, podcasts. If you want to subscribe to this feed in iTunes, you need to go into the Advanced menu (of iTunes) and select Subscribe to Podcast… Then you enter the URL shown above. You may need to GET the file before you can listen to it. In testing I had to do this manually once, but another time it was automatic. (And for some reason the volume level in iTunes seems lower than elsewhere.)

I did create an iTunes friendly image (an 8 bit, 300×300 PNG file) for the podcast but it doesn’t show up for some reason; I also created a standard-compliant JPG image, i.e., reduced in size (100×100). Let me know if these actually show up when you subscribe.

Legal Stuff: All the standard copyright notices apply to the audio excerpt, same as they do to the posted written excerpt. If you want to tell someone about the podcast, I’d prefer if you refer them to my site or the podcast page URL above. Thanks!

REVISED: If you just want to grab the MP3 file, here’s the link:
http://www.passarella.com/podcast/ks_prologue.mp3

Let me know if you enjoy the podcast.

Until next time,
Jack
