I can’t give this stuff away!

Please explain this to me…

I rebooted my swagapalooza prize drawings for mailing list subscribers. Picked a random winner to receive a cool KINDRED SPIRIT totebag, sent a notification email. Waited eight days. No response. Sigh. Picked another winner and it’s been about six days and no response. This person has until midnight tomorrow (SUN) to reply before I have to pick a third name.

Frankly, I’m confused. I’m giving away prizes with no strings attached (other than being a subscriber to my mailing list which these people are already) and I’m getting no reply to the prize notification.

Yes, I’ve avoided exclamation points and the word “prize” etc in the email so that spam filters don’t rush in and clobber the mail site unseen. And no, I’m not getting a bounced message notification or invalid account warning.

So just how many phantom email accounts are out there collecting dust? Doesn’t anybody want free stuff anymore? Has the world gone mad? Are you listening?

Thanks for reading!

4th Annual Matthew’s Miles

After weathering some personal turmoil, my family (more specifically Andrea) has decided to move forward with the 4th Annual Matthew’s Miles.

I revamped the site (www.matthewsmiles.org) to match Matthew’s chosen colors for this year: green and white.

There are many ways you can help us raise money for pediatric brain tumor research. (This year we are giving the money raised to the Children’s Cancer Foundation once again.)

If you’re near us (Logan Township, NJ), you can register to walk. If you’re far away or can’t walk that day (Saturday, OCTOBER 14, 11AM, registration begins at 10:15AM), you can donate money through the site, become an individual or corporate sponsor, or you can help us spread the word by talking about the event or by displaying our new banner.

4th Annual Matthew's Miles Banner

Auction: In the past we’ve had local and eBay auctions. This year, we’re not sure about either. We may have a very limited eBay auction. Locally, we’ve relied on the our pro sports franchises to donate items. But that has become more difficult each year, even though we now have a proven track record and have raised over $65,000 in three years. Go figure.

Keep your fingers crossed we have good weather for this year’s walk, and thanks for your support!

In the news: KINDRED SPIRIT and Me

HorrorWorld.org put up their reviews for August and the review of KINDRED SPIRIT is among them. Here’s a snippet of what they had to say about it:

KINDRED SPIRIT “Kindred Spirit is an excellent offering by John Passarella… a believability that resonates well with the reader…. the ending is cataclysmic but most satisfactory. Well written, fast paced and quite enjoyable, I highly recommend Kindred Spirit.”

Read the whole review here: http://www.horrorworld.org/reviews.htm

Also today: an article about me and KINDRED SPIRIT appeared in our county newspapter, the Gloucester County Times. For those in the southern New Jersey area, you’ll find this article out in the “People” section (August 1, 2006), above the fold, titled Ghost Writer: Logan Township author John Passarella’s seventh novel is a paranormal thrill ride.
Though some of the facts got jumbled a bit, the gist of the article is very complimentary. Emma is the reason I’m smiling in the photograph. She was sneaking into the room where the photographer was taking my picture. Seeing her little face peek around the corner had me laughing, so the photographer had her come into the room and sit behind him, off to the side.

Happy 4th of July

To all my fellow USA readers: I wish you a safe and happy 4th of July, aka Independence Day. I had a quiet signing on July 1st at Borders Express in Mays Landing, NJ. Gorgeous summer weather in South NJ generally keeps people out of the malls. Can’t say I blame them.

Small family get together today, although we’re expecting thunderstorm, potentially damaging thunderstorms with high winds and hail possible. Guess nature wants to trot out her own fireworks for the occasion.

I have one scheduled signing left (July 22 at Borders Express in Echelon Mall from 2 to 5pm), although I may schedule more signings. Although I’m quickly running out of KINDRED SPIRIT giveaway items!

Best face forward: Remember, if you see copies of KINDRED SPIRIT in a bookstore near you, I’d appreciate it if you’d turn them face out. Believe me, it helps. And, if you read and enjoy KINDRED SPIRIT, please tell your friends and online acquaintances about it. Thank you!

Newsletter: I’ve been sending out nearly weekly newsletters (to the consternation of a very few some subscribers), mainly to send reminders about these summer signings. It’s hard to attract crowds to the malls during the summer in this area, so I wanted to give anyone interested every possible chance of remembering where I would be on a given weekend. With only one signing left, I expect to go to a much less frequent newsletter schedule.

But another, growing, problem I see with the newsletter is the declining successful delivery rate. My paid mailing list service tells me the percentage of newsletters that were received and “opened”, and for the past year, I’ve watched that percentage decline from a high in the 90% range to rarely more than 50%. Percentages in the 40s are much more common lately. That means that less than half of the newsletters I send are received. And remember, these are opt-in subscribers. For every 100 people who said send me the newsletter, only 40 or so actually receive it.

Why? My guess is spam blocking at various levels: ISP, e-mail client, anti-spam software. Subscribers either never see it because their Internet provider is blocking delivery or because their own software deems the software to be spam, aka junk mail, and throws it in a spam or junk mail folder along with all the actual spam. I regularly check my own spam/junk folders and will find newsletters I have subscribed to in there, mixed in with all the real spam. I pull them out. But I think a lot of people either never check spam/junk folders for good mail or they simply delete everything in there without sifting through all the crap.

So how good is a paid service when its effective delivery rate is 40%? I don’t know. Since the delivery rate has dropped from 90% to 40% in a year, I expect that sometime soon, e-mail newsletters will be practically worthless. What are the alternatives? Postal mail can be very expensive. I spent $300 simply to send postcards to over a 1,000 people. Not much content on a postcard. And I’m not even notified when addresses are bad since there is no return address service on a postcard.

Blogs and message boards and yahoogroup mailing lists are some alternatives. Although the yahoo lists can as easily be dumped into the spam folders. Blogs require readers to either subscribe or keep checking back for new content. As a novel writer, my new releases come out every twelves or eighteen months. Hardly makes for regular blog checking. Message boards are bombarded with spam. I know: I shut my down because I was tired of weeding out all the porn, gambling, Rolex-knockoff, sexual-aid spam entries. Same goes for the site guestbook.

If anyone has any ideas about how to maintain regular contact with readers, let me know.

In the meantime, expect fewer newsletters. In early October, I’ll need to decide whether to renew my annual service. Most likely, I’ll switch to a pay as you go system. That system provides more info about links clicked, etc. so will be more useful as an analytical tool. Even so, I see the author newsletter fading away soon.

Newsletter prizes: Before the newsletter possibly rides off into the sunset, I do need to give away some prizes. When we moved into a new house, I got sidetracked with the giveaways. These prizes will go to subscribers, assuming they receive the prize notifications.

Again, happy 4th of July! And thanks for reading!
-Jack

Kindred Spirit: Reading Group Discussion Questions

KINDRED SPIRIT Book Cover ThumbnailFor those of you who participate in Book Reading Discussion  Groups, I wanted to let you know that I’ve posted ten discussion questions related to KINDRED SPIRIT on my official Web site. Please note that these questions assume the reader has finished the book. For anyone who has not read the book I would caution you that these questions contain several plot spoilers.

I believe that Kindred Spirit, more than my prior novels (Wither, Wither’s Rain, and Wither’s Legacy) lends itself to reading group discussion. I’m hoping the provided questions, even if they are only used as a starting point, will stimulate interest in Kindred Spirit for book discussion groups. For readers who have not read a lot of genre fiction, it is my most accessible novel. Yes, there are genre elements (ghosts, possession, haunting, a telepathic bond between identical twin sisters), but they are minimal compared the genre influences in my previous works.

If you’d like to learn more about Kindred Spirit, you can view the book detail page without stumbling across the spoilers on the separate Reading Group Discussion Questions page.

Kindred Spirit has already gotten some rave reader reviews online. As always, I’m interested in hearing what you think about my new book.

Thanks for reading!

Preston & Steve, & Philly’s Hottest Undead Babe

Hi, Everyone –

Thumbnail of ZOMBIE RIOTOn Tuesday, May 16, I was on the Preston & Steve Morning show on 93.3 FM, WMMR (wmmr.com), but my group (Will Horner, the editor and David Seidman, the illustrator of Modern Magic, along with fellow MM author Christe M. Callabro, and photographer Celeste Giuliano) didn’t actually get on the air until about 10:40. The show ran long, but we did get on. You can listen to the P&S podcast by going to the WMMR site, clicking on the P&S link, then on the podcast button. Select the podcast for 5/16.

I arrived at the station’s parking lot around 8am. Went up to the studio waiting room area at 8:30, then waited around for a while. We were called into the studio around 9:45 or so, but had to wait for various scheduled bits to end, then Pierre Robert came in and went off on a marvelous rant against Axl Rose. He fired up the callers and away we went…

John Passarella on Preston and Steve show for UNDEAD AIR promotion

Anyway, we talked briefly about the genesis of the story idea for “Undead Air” my zombie-slaying short story featuring Preston and Steves as themselves, but armed to the teeth and kicking zombie butt. Afterward, Preston, Steve, and illustrator David Seidman signed my print of Zombie Riot, the artwork that inspired the story.

You can see a picture of the autographed Zombie Riot at my web site, on the short stories page.

MODERN MAGICIf you want to buy a copy of Modern Magic (which features “Undead Air” and 25 other tales of modern fantasy and horror), you can grab a copy at Amazon.com or purchase a copy through Fantasist Enterprises, or febooks.net.

Will has scheduled two events so far for Modern Magic, one is a signing at the Borders Express in Echelon Mall, Voorhees NJ on Saturday, May 20 from 2 to 5pm. And later that day (7pm to 9pm) a launch party at Kildare’s tavern in Manayunk, PA.

I will be speaking to the Garden State Horror Writers on 5/20, so I’m not sure I’ll be able to stop by the Echelon Mall signing. If I get back at a decent hour, I’ll try to swing by for a bit. Also, we’re having a family party for my son’s birthday on that day as well, so I may or may not be able to swing by Kildare’s. Looks to be a very busy day, regardless. I’m hoping to be at other signings for Modern Magic…but do keep in mind, I will be having my own launch party for KINDRED SPIRIT at Between Books on Philadelphia Pike in Claymont, DE on June 10 from 1PM to 3PM and the store should have copies of Modern Magic there as well.
Finally, back on topic, everyone at the Preston & Steve show was great, very gracious (and apologetic for the late start), and Nick McIlwain even included a link to my home page on the prestonandsteve.com home and links pages from which I’m getting a lot of hits. Thanks, Nick!

“Undead Air” was fun to research and a blast to write. I hope all the Preston & Steve fans out there enjoy it — and watch out for Philly’s Hottest Undead Babe!

Until next time,
-Jack

Patience Rewarded at WMMR

If you were listening for my 9 to 9:15am appearance on Preston & Steve’s show today on WMMR 93.3 out of Philadelphia, you had to hang around for a while. We didn’t go on the air until the tail end of the show, which ran almost to 11am. You can check out the WMMR podcast for 5/16 to hear our appearance promoting MODERN MAGIC, and my story “Undead Air” which features Preston & Steve slaying zombies.

Here’s the straight link to the MP3 file:

It was a great, fun show and on the one year anniversary of Preston and Steve’s move to WMMR.

Hi, Everyone –

A quick note to relay that my radio appearance on the Preston & Steve Morning Show (WMMR 93.3 FM, Philadelphia, PA) has been confirmed for:

TUE, MAY 16
Starting between 9AM and 9:15AM

I’ll be talking about my zombie story “Undead Air” which appears in the Modern Magic anthology, and features real life DJs Preston & Steve battling drive-time commuter zombies with an assortment of weapons. Well, they were drive-time commuters BEFORE they became zombies…
