Passarella News: New Wendy Ward, new signing dates

INTRODUCTION: It's been a while since the last newsletter. I have a bunch of news to report, including a new Wendy Ward story, some new appearances, Brian Keene on KINDRED SPIRIT, my place on MySpace, prizes for subscribers, and more. Let's begin...

. . : : NEW SITE DESIGN : : . .

If you haven't visited passarella.com in a while, you might not recognize it! I've completely revamped the design. I changed the color scheme to be light text on a dark background, which is easier on the eyes, i.e., less glare. I kept my gargoyle-leaping-out-of-the-notebook-computer image, but I reduced his prominence in the overall site header. Take a look and let me know what you think of the new design.

If you are one of the many Brian Keene fans out there, check out what Brian has to say about KINDRED SPIRIT:

“Intense and atmospheric, John Passarella's KINDRED SPIRIT is a stylish slow-build of page-turning suspense. A paranormal mystery-thriller guaranteed to leave you breathless.”
—BRIAN KEENE, best-selling author of
THE CONQUEROR WORMS and GHOUL

Another recent review of KINDRED SPIRIT came from HORRORWORLD.ORG. Here's an excerpt:

“KINDRED SPIRIT is an excellent offering by John Passarella... a believability that resonates well with the reader... the ending is cataclysmic but most satisfactory. Well written, fast paced and quite enjoyable, I highly recommend KINDRED SPIRIT.”
—Horror World, HorrorWorld.org

New WENDY WARD STORY Coming Soon
(And Other Chapbook News)

I will have TWO CHAPBOOKS coming out from Scrybe Press soon, the second of which will feature the new Wendy Ward novelette, "BREATHLESS". But first...

Debts Long Due/All Heaven In A Rage (NOV 2006): Readers have asked me how to get hold of my short story "Debts Long Due" and my novelette "All Heaven In A Rage". Both stories appeared in limited print run anthologies* and are basically out of print. The good news is that both stories will be back in print soon in a single chapbook (with flip covers), from Scrybe Press.

Artist Eric Asaris, who always creates great posters for my signings at Borders Express in Montgomery Mall (North Wales, PA), has done some stunning (and haunting) illustrations for the flip cover (see at right, and below right) and interior pages of this chapbook.

(Look for an advertisement feauring this chapbook in the pages of the October issue of Realms of Fantasy magazine, part of a a full-page Scrybe Press ad.)

*Publication History: "Debts Long Due" appeared online in HorrorFind's fiction section and later in print in the limited edition anthology THE BEST OF HORRORFIND II); "All Heaven In A Rage" appeared in UNNATURAL SELECTION, a print and electronic anthology.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
(In Case You Were Wondering):

CHAPBOOK: Basically, a 5.25" x 8.5" booklet with a board or glossy stock cover. Often stapled down the middle but, if long enough, perfect bound, similar to the binding of a paperback book. Prices based on length, generally $2.99 to $5.99.

New WENDY WARD Novelette! (in Chapbook #2)

This second chapbook (DEC 2006) will feature a reprint of the first Wendy Ward novelette (originally printed in the limited-run DARK NOTES FROM NEW JERSEY anthology), "Forces of Nature" and the brand new Wendy Ward novelette, "Breathless." These stories take place after the events in WITHER'S LEGACY and carry the characters of the Wendy Ward series forward in time.

Story Notes: In "Forces of Nature" Wendy has a difficult choice to make, a decision that could affect the rest of her life. In "Breathless" (the new novelette) Wendy, while at Alex's hospital bedside, must face an implacable and invulnerable foe (so what else is new for this remarkable Wiccan, right?); also, Hannah, who continues to age at an accelerated pace, is back in Windale for a timely visit, physically transformed and exhibiting a new talent.

Each of these Wendy stories is approximately 10,000 words. With introduction, this chapbook will run 20,000-plus-words. As of this writing, it looks as if Christina Cartwright will illustrate the cover for the Wendy Ward chapbook, which may also have interior illustrations. Expect more details as the publication date nears.

CHAPBOOK AVAILABILITY: These chapbooks will be available from Scrybe Press (scrybepress.com or 1-866-343-4516), Amazon.com, Kayleighbug Books (Kayleighbug.com), Shocklines.com, and at your local book seller through distributors Ingram and Baker & Taylor. Of course, you'll be able to order signed and personalized copies directly from the author, yours truly.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
(continued):

NOVELETTE: A story between 7,500 to 17,499 words.

RETURN OF SWAG-A-PALOOZA (aka PRIZES!)

Yes, I've resumed my swag-a-palooza prize drawings again. The problem I'm having is getting people to respond to the prize-winner notifications. (I won't award prizes to the owners of abandoned e-mail addresses.) I try to word the subject and header in such a way that spam filters won't gobble up the e-mail sight-unseen. Even so, it took about 4 consecutive random drawings to give away a KINDRED SPIRIT tote bag. I started to draw three prize winners at a time to increase the odds of a reply. Got one response. I need to pick two new names to win a WITHER'S RAIN mug and an autographed WITHER'S LEGACY 11" x 17" mini-poster. Watch those inboxes, people! The next winner could be you.

You need to be a newsletter subscriber to be eligible for prize drawings.

4TH ANNUAL MATTHEW'S MILES: SAT, OCT 14, 2006

My family will be hosting the 4th Annual Matthew's Miles Walk For A Brain Tumor Cure. South Jersey's 104.9FM radio station will be broadcasting live from the event from 10am to 11am. Proceeds benefit pediatric brain tumor research by the Children's Cancer Foundation (CCF). CCF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Our eBay auction will be very limited this time (although we already have an auction bundle from Laurell K. Hamilton), so we've opened a Matthew's Miles online store. Any profits from the sale of Matthew's Miles merchandise will be added to our total donation to CCF. Sport our gear and support our cause!
